Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be an apprentice at MGL Group? We had the opportunity to catch up with our Trainee Business Administrator, Clarice, who has been with us since 2023. Based at our Durham headquarters, Davison House, Clarice’s role includes studying one day a week at college. Join us as we spotlight her apprenticeship journey and what it means to be a part of Team MGL.
What is your role, and which apprenticeship are you following?
I’m a Trainee Business Administrator studying for a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship.
What motivated you to pursue an apprenticeship?
I wanted to gain practical experience while earning a salary. I’m also passionate about learning and growing in a professional environment.
What does a typical day look like?
My day-to-day involves various tasks, such as greeting visitors, managing the mail, and supporting the accounts department with invoicing. I also manage the switchboard, field incoming calls, and route them to the appropriate person.
What tools and technologies are commonly used for your work?
I mainly use SharePoint to find and file documents.
What skills or knowledge have you gained through your apprenticeship?
My apprenticeship has significantly improved my communication skills, and I feel more confident speaking with colleagues and clients. I’ve also gained an understanding of the construction industry.
What opportunities for professional development or training are available?
I can access additional training through iHasco and am keen to enhance my Microsoft Office skills. I’ve also had the chance to support various departments, including marketing, finance, and HR. Recently I attended the North East STEM Foundation’s annual fundraising dinner, where I gained insights into the industry and expanded my network.

What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a career in the construction industry?
Be open-minded and seize every opportunity. There is so much knowledge and experience to be gained in the industry.
