Carbon Footprint and Net Zero

Reshaping the built environment around us, ensuring a truly sustainable future

At MGL Group, we are dedicated to minimising our environmental impact as a responsible business. Our comprehensive carbon reduction plan has yielded significant results, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to sustainability. We strive to reduce energy consumption across all operations, from manufacturing processes to material sourcing and waste management.

Innovation is at the heart of our approach. We continually seek new ways to address environmental challenges and create long-term value for our community. By collaborating with our clients and supply chain, we are committed to reducing the embodied carbon of projects throughout their lifecycle.

One of the most significant factors impacting our carbon footprint is the asphalt materials required for the surfacing works we undertake. Adopting a circular economy approach helps us work towards net zero. By continuously exploring new ways to minimise our environmental impact, we ensure that sustainability remains at the core of our operations.

Net Zero Asphalt

Our pioneering net zero asphalt, developed in partnership with Durham County Council and Low Carbon Materials (LCM), significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. It incorporates recycled materials and a carbon-negative aggregate, paving the way to a more sustainable future.

Successfully trialled at Elvet Hill Road in County Durham, this innovative material permanently removed 12,000 kg of CO2e from the atmosphere. Since then, we've undertaken other projects, and Prince William recognised our work in decarbonising the built environment during a recent visit to the North East.

Plastipave®

Our sustainable material incorporates single-use plastic waste and rubber crumb from vehicle tyres, significantly reducing the volume of virgin aggregates used in asphalt production. Integrating these recycled materials not only helps to minimise waste but also enhances the durability and performance of our asphalt products.

Every 20 tonnes produced incorporates over 1,000 single-use carrier bags and the residue from over 50 car tyres, potentially reducing carbon emissions by over 270 kg.

NappiCycle Pellets

By incorporating NappiCycle pellets made from recycled nappies, we're creating a more sustainable asphalt mix. This innovative approach reduces waste, lowers carbon emissions and enhances our asphalt's durability and water resistance, leading to longer-lasting roads.

In partnership with Darlington Borough Council, our trial at Snipe Lane diverted 4,200 nappies from landfill, saving 5.96 tonnes of carbon. This demonstrates our commitment to the circular economy and our goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
