Carbon Footprint and Net Zero

Reshaping the built environment around us, ensuring a truly sustainable future

At MGL Group, we are committed to minimising environmental impact and driving sustainable progress. Our data-driven carbon reduction strategy, built on accountability and ambition, has delivered measurable results, achieving a 36% reduction in carbon intensity since our 2019 baseline.

Using the Smart Carbon platform and aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, we monitor Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions across fuel, utilities, waste, and materials. Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) of asphalt products help us identify key emission sources and guide targeted interventions. These insights drive our carbon reduction plan.

Innovation is central to our approach. We collaborate with clients and our supply chain to reduce embodied carbon across project lifecycles, with a particular focus on asphalt materials used in surfacing works. By embracing circular economy principles and continuously exploring new solutions, we ensure sustainability remains at the heart of everything we do.

Net Zero Asphalt

Our pioneering net zero asphalt, developed in partnership with Durham County Council and Low Carbon Materials (LCM), significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. It incorporates recycled materials and a carbon-negative aggregate, paving the way to a more sustainable future. The pilot scheme at Elvet Hill Road accounted for 12,000 kg of CO₂e savings. This initiative has been recognised across the industry, featured on ITV News, won a County Durham Environment Award, and received Royal recognition from HRH Prince William during a visit to LCM’s headquarters.

In 2024/25, we completed six schemes, resulting in a reduction of 65,436 kg of carbon emissions. To date, this innovation has prevented an estimated 316,008 kg of CO₂e from entering the atmosphere, equivalent to a patrol car driving nearly 2 million kilometres.

Plastipave®

Our sustainable material incorporates single-use plastic waste and rubber crumb from vehicle tyres, significantly reducing the volume of virgin aggregates used in asphalt production. Integrating these recycled materials not only helps to minimise waste but also enhances the durability and performance of our asphalt products.

Each 20-tonne batch diverts the equivalent of 2,127 single-use carrier bags and 50 tyres from landfill. Since 2018, overall, we’ve diverted the equivalent of over 32 million plastic bags or 24 million 2-litre milk cartons, significantly reducing plastic waste and supporting the circular economy.

NappiCycle Pellets

By incorporating NappiCycle pellets made from recycled nappies, we're creating a more sustainable asphalt mix. This innovative approach reduces waste, lowers carbon emissions and enhances our asphalt's durability and water resistance, leading to longer-lasting roads.

In partnership with Darlington Borough Council, our trial at Snipe Lane diverted 4,200 nappies from landfill, saving 5.96 tonnes of carbon. This demonstrates our commitment to the circular economy and our goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
