Sherburn Village Primary School
Project Overview
Before demolishing a school building, MGL Demolition was contracted to remove notifiable and non-notifiable asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). The project involved a combination of hand demolition and remote demolition techniques.
The removal of notifiable materials was undertaken as per our Plan of Works and ASB5 notification to the HSE.
Scope of Works
The scope of works was as follows:
- Removal of notifiable ACMs, including asbestos insulation board (AIB) shuttering, AIB debris paper lining, and thermal insulation.
- Hand demolition of the intersection between the remaining school section and the section to be demolished.
- Remote demolition to safely demolish the designated section of the school.
- Site clearance, removal of demolition debris and reinstatement of the site.
Challenges
The project presented unique challenges due to its location within a live environment, requiring meticulous coordination and planning to minimise disruptions. Removing ACMs within ducts necessitated adherence to stringent safety protocols, confined space entry permits, and method statements.
Additionally, the project faced potential time constraints as asbestos removal had to be completed to enable the services that ran from the live school into the section to be isolated and demolished.
Summary
We safely completed the work, demonstrating the team’s expertise in handling complex and challenging projects. Working efficiently in a live environment, while adhering to strict regulations, underscores our commitment to professionalism and quality.
