SeAH Wind Monopile Facility
Project Overview
Rainton Construction is undertaking an extensive civil engineering package at the SeAH Wind monopile factory site at Teesworks, playing an integral role in site operations. The principal contractor, K2 Construction Management, is developing the 800-metre monopile factory, which will create 750 direct jobs and 1,500 indirect jobs.
Challenges
Our experienced project team has meticulously planned and executed large-scale concrete pours to meet the required specifications. A key challenge has been managing high labour levels while working 24/7. At peak times, 300 operatives worked on-site simultaneously to meet programme deadlines. We continue to meet project milestones through exceptional teamwork and meticulous planning.
Safety and Sustainability
We have utilised Bamtec reinforcement technology to aid programming. Bamtec reinforcement offers several benefits in concrete construction, such as improving efficiency and reducing labour costs. The system uses pre-assembled reinforcement mats that can be rolled out directly on-site, significantly speeding up installation compared to traditional methods. It reduces material waste by improving bar placement and enhances structural integrity with a precise reinforcement layout.
Additionally, Bamtec’s design flexibility allows for custom configurations, leading to fewer overlaps and more accurate reinforcement distribution, ultimately saving time and reducing overall project costs.
The reinforcement bar is 100% UK-made, using 98% UK recycled scrap resources, and is ECO-Reinforcement, CARES, and BBA certified. We appointed a key supplier whose products boast the lowest Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) values in the UK, at 500 kg CO2 per tonne for cut and bent rebar post-fabrication and delivery, aligning with the project’s sustainable practices. Promoting a national circular economy has been an important part of this, with scrap materials from the decommissioned Redcar Steelworks transformed using Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology into valuable products for the local supply chain. This collaboration marks a significant success for the resource efficiency of UK steel, sustainable construction, and supply chain resilience.
Social Value
Committed to positively impacting beyond our core services, we have supported local charities, community groups, and worthwhile causes. From donating a minibus to empower local individuals and help them capitalise on opportunities at Teesworks and the wider region to hosting a charity golf day with K2 Construction Management to support two mental health charities, we strive to make a difference in our community.
Summary
Work on site is ongoing; we are proud to be part of this highly complex and ambitious project. SeAH Wind’s facility will be one of the world’s largest, supporting the UK’s goal of decarbonising its electricity supply.
