Metro Tunnels
Project Overview
MGL Demolition completed a challenging asbestos removal project at Newcastle Central Metro Station. This was a complex and deadline-driven scheme.
The initial work package was a 5-day project to remove notifiable asbestos-containing vitreous enamel (VE) panels. However, the project’s complexity grew with additional work being added, showcasing the expertise team’s adaptability and expertise.
Scope of Works
- Removal of notifiable asbestos-containing vitreous enamel (VE) panels.
- Encapsulation of the wet shield tunnel lining.
- Transportation of asbestos through the tunnel system to a rail siding at Forth Banks.
- Licensed disposal of asbestos materials.
Challenges
The project worked to time constraints and required working “out of hours” from 8 pm to 5 am, Sunday through Thursday, to accommodate the Metro Station’s operations. With limited access, work had to be completed within specific timeframes to allow for the power-down and power-up of overhead power lines.
MGL Demolition’s operatives required specialised training and equipment to work within the rail infrastructure.
Summary
MGL Demolition completed the prioritising safety, efficiency, and compliance. The work was safely completed within the 16-week programme.
