Hexion
Following a competitive tendering exercise, MGL Demolition was appointed as Principal Contractor to undertake the dismantling and structural demolition of the Hexion chemical plant in Peterlee.
Working closely with the client during the preparation phase we ensured that all process elements of the plant were cleaned and certified. This meant a detailed assessment into the decommissioning of the many residual chemicals and processes from the site was needed to give us reassurance of the de-inventorying success.
Agreed protocols were implemented and works were split into discrete areas. We incrementally progressed to ensure each work zone was decontaminated adequately. The site was subject to a dilapidation assessment and all services were either terminated or diverted.
A significant quantity of asbestos, used to protect key plant, was progressively removed by our specialist asbestos team prior to plant removal and subsequent demolition.
The existing process tank farms on site were individually assessed; tanks that still had operational use were dismantled and salvaged for reuse. Tanks up to 28,000 litre capacity were salvaged for reuse at other client facilities. All remaining tanks were dismantled or demolished and processed for recycling and removal of site.
The main 21m formalin process tower was demolished by a successful controlled collapse. Following completion of the ground demolition, designated drainage was sealed and filled in accordance with the specification.
