Elvet Hill Road, Durham City

Project Overview

MGL Group, in partnership with Durham County Council and Low Carbon Materials (LCM), successfully delivered County Durham’s first-ever net zero asphalt scheme. Tynedale Roadstone produced the innovative asphalt, while the surfacing division, part of Rainton Construction expertly laid the material on Elvet Hill Road in Durham City.

Sustainability

This pioneering asphalt significantly reduces carbon emissions. By capturing and storing carbon dioxide within the material, it permanently removes it from the atmosphere through a process known as sequestration. This project included 220 tonnes of net zero binder course asphalt, removing nearly 12,000 kg of carbon dioxide.
