Project Overview

MGL Demolition has transformed Stockton’s town centre by demolishing Castlegate Shopping Centre, the 10-storey Swallow Hotel, and the 5-storey car park, clearing the 32,400m² site for Stockton Waterfront.

The urban park will have flexible community and large-scale events spaces, and a land bridge structure will connect High Street to the riverside.

Scope of Works

  • Asbestos removal
  • Soft strip
  • Demolition
  • Crushing and storage of arisings for reuse

Challenges

Limited space presented a significant challenge for safe operations. We successfully executed the project through meticulous planning, strategic traffic management, and coordinated road closures.

Due to the site’s location, dust control was paramount. Our team effectively mitigated with water cannons and high-pressure hoses, safeguarding the environment and ensuring wellbeing.

Sustainability & Community Impact

In total, over 80,000 tonnes of site materials were processed for reuse. During this project, over 99% of non-hazardous waste was directed from landfill.

This project is not just about physical change; it’s about fostering partnerships and creating meaningful impact. MGL Demolition supported the local community through donations and pledging a lifesaving defibrillator in Teesdale.

Summary

Work was completed at the end of 2023. Over 81,000 operative hours were undertaken, with zero lost time incidents. This paves the way for redevelopment, offering a dedicated space for community events and opening the town centre.

We are proud to enable brighter prospects and a thriving future as part of the regeneration programme led by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.
