The final sections of the New Wear Footbridge arrived in Sunderland. MGL Earthworks is proud to have played a vital role in preparing the site. Our expertise enabled the delivery of this iconic landmark as part of the VolkerStevin project team.
The two steel sections of the footbridge, measuring 63 metres and 105 metres, arrived in Sunderland on August 31st after a journey from Ghent, Belgium. Our team’s extensive site clearance, contamination assessments, platform construction, and bulk earthworks ensured the site was ready for construction.
The 10m-wide, 30m-high footbridge, expected to open in summer 2025, will serve as the centrepiece of the Riverside Sunderland development. Linking key regeneration areas on either side of the Wear will boost local businesses and significantly improve accessibility to popular attractions.
We are thrilled to have contributed to the Riverside Sunderland masterplan. The New Wear Footbridge will connect communities and drive economic growth.
