Pier Road Bridge
Project Overview
Rainton Construction was appointed by the main contractor, Capita, to deliver a comprehensive bridge renovation for North Tyneside Council.
Pier Road Bridge is a vital link, providing access to the English Coast Path, National Cycle Network routes, and locations like the Tynemouth Sailing Club, residential dwellings, museums, and historical landmarks.
Scope of Works
- Foundations and bridge support
- New concrete deck for road
- Traffic barriers and replacement timber fence
- Stone facing to façade
- Road resurfacing
Challenges
The bridge’s coastal location presented a unique challenge, requiring careful coordination to manage ever-changing weather conditions. However, the team’s expertise and professionalism ensured the project’s completion while maintaining the highest standards.
We were mindful of the designated wildlife corridor and collaborated with an ecology team to implement suitable mitigation measures, minimising any potential environmental impact.
Throughout the project, emergency access to residential dwellings remained a top priority. Additionally, vehicle access to the bridge was maintained for most of the construction period to minimise disruption to residents and visitors. Night work was strategically employed to accelerate completion within the shortest possible timeframe.
Summary
Rainton Construction is proud to have helped restore Pier Road Bridge, ensuring safe and sustainable access for all users. The project’s success, achieved through exceptional teamwork, was delivered on time and under budget.
