What is your role, and which apprenticeship are you following?
I’m on a Development Apprenticeship programme with MGL, which covers all aspects of construction including engineering, health & safety, commercial, and quantity surveying. I’m completing a Construction Support Technician course with New College Durham. I’m also currently working on the huge SeAH Wind site at Teesworks; this is a really big project to get started on.
What motivated you to pursue an apprenticeship?
I knew I wasn’t that interested in staying on in college to study and really wanted to start earning whilst learning a job. I was lucky that I knew some friends and family in construction, so I was able to get some work experience in February to explore the different careers within the industry. It really opened my eyes to all the different types of jobs and that it’s not all about bricklaying. I spoke to other people who had completed apprenticeships in construction and was inspired by how they’d progressed in their careers.
What does a typical day look like?
In construction, every day is different, which is something I really enjoy. The variety of tasks keeps things interesting and motivates me. My workday runs from 8:30 AM to 5 PM, either on-site or in the office. Each morning starts with catching up with the team and going over the day’s tasks. Currently, I’m shadowing the site managers, which involves using different software and doing regular site walk-arounds to check on progress. I’m also involved in health and safety, including handling the weekly returns. Additionally, we’re building a car park, so I’m learning the basics of its preparation and construction process.
What tools and technologies are commonly used for your work?
At work, I use a variety of tools like Bluebeam, Viewpoint, SharePoint, Excel, and email. These are useful because they help me stay organised and give me a better understanding of every part of the project. Just using them daily has helped me learn a lot more about the work we are doing.
What skills or knowledge have you gained through your apprenticeship?
I’ve gained valuable skills and knowledge, especially in using new technology, understanding what makes concrete stronger, and which types of foundations are needed for different projects.
What opportunities for professional development or training are available?
I’m currently studying at New College Durham to complete a Level 3 Construction Support Technician course. Alongside this, I’ve had additional training in health and safety, manual handling, and vehicle banksman courses.
What makes our company special or unique compared to other workplaces?
MGL Group is a family-run company, and their employees are truly valued. On my first day, everyone was so helpful and really helped me settle into working life.
What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a career in the construction industry?
Definitely go for a job in construction! It is so interesting being on-site and learning about how everything works. Make sure you come in and give your all every day as every day brings brilliant opportunities to learn and progress your career in construction.
