Alpha Taxiway
Project Overview
Rainton Construction completed the rehabilitation of the Alpha Taxiway at Teesside International Airport, utilising materials produced by Tynedale Roadstone, also part of MGL Group.
This project was vital to the airport’s broader development plan to increase revenue from non-commercial flight activities. The upgraded taxiway now provides access to additional hangar facilities, facilitating aircraft maintenance operations.
Challenges
Despite initial delays pushing back the project’s start date, Rainton Construction collaborated closely with the client to streamline the design and explore value engineering opportunities. This proactive approach allowed the project to move forward and expand the scope while maintaining the budget constraints.
Additionally, airside activities within 75m of the main runway required night possessions from 22.30 to 05.00, which added complexity to the project scheduling and execution.
Sustainability
Phase 1 of the project was carried out over three weeks, with over 2,400t of cold planings removed and 4,500t of new asphalt laid. The project also emphasised sustainability by using locally produced materials, reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation.
Summary
The initial works were completed two weeks ahead of schedule, enabling the installation of Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) without additional nighttime closures during the busy May holiday period.
The runway’s resurfacing guarantees ongoing safety and efficiency of airport operations.
