MGL Earthworks is proud to have played a pivotal role in Riverside Sunderland’s regeneration, working as part of the Volker Stevin delivery team on the iconic New Wear Footbridge project.
A major milestone was recently achieved with the arrival of the first 83-metre steel sections at the Port of Sunderland. This marks significant progress in constructing this landmark structure.
Our team’s expertise was instrumental in preparing the site for construction. We undertook extensive site clearance, contamination assessments, platform construction, and bulk earthworks, creating a solid foundation for the impressive 10m-wide, 30m-high footbridge.
The New Wear Footbridge will transform the area by enhancing connectivity between the city centre and Sheepfolds. This project is a cornerstone of the Riverside Sunderland Masterplan, which aims to revitalise the area with new homes, offices, and public spaces.
