MGL Demolition and MGL Earthworks have played a crucial role in redeveloping the former Sunderland Civic Centre. The project is part of Sunderland City Council’s regeneration programme to create a vibrant new community and boost the local economy by doubling the number of people living and working in the city centre.
Work began in October 2022, marking the first step in transforming the site into a city centre community of 265 homes.
The 1970s Civic Centre, multi-storey car park, and adjoining footbridge were dismantled as part of this project. Works included asbestos removal, soft strip, and floor-by-floor and remote demolition.
MGL Earthworks carried out remediation and earthworks to prepare the site for development by Vistry North East.
The project in Sunderland was completed on time and within budget, with positive feedback was received from the client.
“Sunderland is transforming at pace, driven by the ambition of this council, and it’s been brilliant to see that energy reflected in the rapid transformation of the former Civic Centre site, which we once called home. A matter of weeks after we relocated to City Hall, work was underway on demolition of the site and now we’re seeing a new community take shape, which will bring more people to the heart of the city to live and play.”
