Planner/Senior Planner

Location North East

About the Role

Due to our continued success and growth we now have opportunities for new members to join our planning team. As part of the team, you will be involved in the development and monitoring of programmes to deliver successful outcomes on multiple projects across all of our sectors. Based in the North East, you will be required to travel to various sites and projects throughout the region, ranging in value from £100k to over £10m. These roles will also require you to assist with work winning from time to time.

Forward looking and driven to continuously improve, you will also need to have a pro-active and collaborative approach to your work, combined with excellent planning, analytical and communication skills. Our team has had significant success and experience in mentoring, training and supporting junior or less experienced planners. As such, we are happy to consider applicants with a site / operational background, such as Engineers or Project Managers, who may be considering a change of direction in their career.

In return for your skills and expertise, we can offer successful candidates a competitive salary and benefits. Candidates must also be eligible to work in the UK and hold a UK/EU driving licence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand each project in detail, working with both tender and contract teams to establish smooth handovers from work winning to delivery.
  • Prepare and submit accurate, compliant programmes for projects in accordance with our operational, contractual and commercial requirements. These may be developed from first principles, using your experience, established outputs and defined methods.
  • Work with the senior project team members to develop clear, precise methodologies and communicate these to the wider team, senior management and Clients alike.
  • Assist in producing any visual information or other data to further support understanding of the programme, e.g. phasing plans, temporary works layouts and histograms.
  • Monitor and update programmes as required throughout a project’s lifetime. Produce narratives, reviews and reports as appropriate.
  • Undertake critical path and programme risk analysis. Understand these and highlight / communicate areas of concern to the project team and senior management. Develop and review mitigation measures.
  • Assist the commercial team with change management, providing supporting programmes for delays and entitlement claims as necessary.
  • Work closely with our Project Managers, providing advice, drive and support for their weekly lookaheads and short term programmes.
  • Attend internal meetings, and Client meetings as required, to support the project team with programme related matters.
  • For a Senior Planner role, assist in the development of the planning department and the mentoring of junior staff.

What we are looking for

  • An appropriate Engineering or Construction related qualification – Degree / HND / HNC.
  • Relevant experience working in civil engineering and/or demolition environments.
  • Previous planning or project control experience is essential for a Senior Planner role.
  • Engineering knowledge, alongside application and experience of using it, is essential. Therefore, applicants should have previous experience of working on site, either in a planning or operational role.
  • Experienced user of Asta Powerproject, although training can be provided. Familiarity with other packages such as MS Project or P6 would be beneficial.
  • Good IT skills and knowledge – Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook.
  • Experience in dealing with the main forms of construction contracts, eg NEC, JCT, and their programme-related contractual and commercial procedures.
  • Adaptable, with a pro-active and self-motivated attitude and the ability to work under your own initiative.
  • An ability to think analytically and logically.
  • Able to work fast and accurately to tight deadlines whilst maintaining attention to detail.
  • Good communication & teamworking skills to enable wider understanding of planning implications / requirements across the project teams, senior management and Clients.
  • Able to mentor junior staff and work with other colleagues to promote good planning and share knowledge and experience.
