What is your role?
Last year, I completed my degree in Civil Engineering at Northumbria University with first-class honours and joined MGL Group as a Graduate Planner in 2023. I am involved in the strategic planning and development of civil engineering projects. I am working at the SeAH Wind facility on part of the Teesworks site, gaining on-site experience and expanding my knowledge.
What does a typical day look like?
As a recent graduate, every day presents new challenges and learning opportunities. My role involves managing schedules, tracking progress, attending client meetings, and actively contributing to the project’s success.
What tools and technologies are commonly used for your work?
I use Asta Powerproject to prioritise, plan and manage projects and Bluebeam planning software, enabling real-time collaboration and project management from design to completion.
What skills or knowledge have you gained?
In addition to using planning software, I’m gaining practical experience on-site, building my confidence and communication skills and applying the principles I’ve learned during my degree in a live work environment.
What opportunities for professional development or training are available?
In the future, I want to undertake professional training courses and work towards becoming chartered with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). This will enhance my skills and expertise.
What makes our company special or unique compared to other workplaces?
Being a family-run business creates a supportive and caring environment where everyone matters. In my short time here, I’ve felt valued and part of the team rather than just a number.
What are your future goals?
Currently, I’m focusing on learning and gaining experience to improve my skills, especially in planning. In the future, I aim to take on a leadership role and positively impact the construction industry.
What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a career in the construction industry?
There’s always more to learn and someone to learn from. Take every chance to ask questions and soak up knowledge. This lifelong learning mindset will significantly enhance your career in the construction industry.
We are showcasing the diverse opportunities within MGL Group and the wider construction industry to celebrate National Careers Week. Through insights from our team members, we aim to inspire the next generation on their career journey.
