A Day in the Life of an Apprentice Engineer

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be an apprentice in the construction industry? As part of National Careers Week, we’re offering a glimpse into the diverse apprenticeships available at MGL Group. Meet Lewis, our Apprentice Engineer who has been with the business since 2021. He works on-site with the MGL Earthworks team and studies at college one day a week. Join us as we dive into a day in his life.

What is your role, and which apprenticeship are you following?
As an Apprentice Engineer, I conduct asbuilt surveys to calculate material volumes and keep the site team up to date on the quantity of materials onsite. I work full-time and study one day per week at New College Durham for a BTEC Level 3 Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering.

What motivated you to pursue an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is an opportunity to earn while learning; I enjoy developing my skills on-site and building on my knowledge in the classroom.

What does a typical day look like?
I set up our GPS Base Station, so the heavy plant on site can follow line and level, which I check regularly throughout the day. Once sections of the site have been completed, I carry out quality checks to ensure testing is being undertaken and that the results meet the earthworks’ specifications.

What tools and technologies are commonly used for your work?
We use Trimble Earthworks control software for our plant and machinery operations. We use a Trimble Robotic system for surveys and setting out, which ensures high accuracy and reliability for site positioning, stakeout, and measurement. I also use AutoCAD and LSS software to process my surveys.

What skills or knowledge have you gained through your apprenticeship?
I’ve gained valuable skills and knowledge, particularly in using new technology and conducting surveys. It’s rewarding to work independently while also receiving support from my team, who are helpful and always there to help.

What opportunities for professional development or training are available?
I have completed a NVQ Level 3 in Construction Contracting Operations, extra training like Manual Handling, CAT and Genny, and various Health & Safety Courses, including Asbestos Awareness.

When will you complete your apprenticeship, and what are your future goals?
I’ll finish my apprenticeship, ONC, and HNC by 2026. I’m excited to become a qualified site engineer, work independently, and continue improving my skills. I’ve enjoyed my apprenticeship and look forward to mentoring future apprentices and passing on what I’ve learned to support the next generation.

What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a career in the construction industry?
Be open to learning and take every opportunity to gain experience, skills, and knowledge.
