Framework Overview

Since 2013, Rainton Construction has been the incumbent contractor for highway surfacing solutions in Durham.  Thisincludes planing and reinstating surface and binder course, traffic management, inlay patching, full reconstruction, footways, and cycleways. As a NEPO Highways Surfacing Framework member, we have completed surfacing schemes and miscellaneous patching works throughout the county.

Materials are provided by Tynedale Roadstone and laid by the surfacing division.

Sustainability

Plastipave, our innovative asphalt product incorporating recycled rubber and single-use plastic waste, is a cornerstone of our sustainable highway surfacing solutions in Durham. A recent project on the A689 dual carriageway successfully reused over 6.5 tonnes of waste plastic, demonstrating Plastipave’s environmental benefits.

In collaboration with Low Carbon Materials, we pioneered Net Zero Asphalt on Elvet Hill Road. This groundbreaking initiative significantly reduced the project’s carbon footprint, paving the way for a more sustainable future in construction. Other schemes in Durham City and Seaham have helped to decarbonise the county’s road network.

Safety and sustainability remain paramount in our approach. A road resurfacing project using Hazigrip® was trialled on the A167 in Ferryhill. Our innovative anti-skid asphalt technology performed to all relevant standards and specifications and was used on another scheme in Murton.
