Project Overview

Rainton Construction was appointed Principal Contractor to undertake civil and structural engineering works on a 13,000m² brownfield site, supported by MGL Demolition, MGL Earthworks and Supply Chain Partners.

Surfacing was undertaken by our in-house team, and the material was provided by Tynedale Roadstone.

Scope of Works

The scope of works included:

  • Site clearance and demolition of existing structures, including low-level brick buildings and concrete structures, and grubbing out foundations.
  • Earthworks, including removing existing non-hazardous bunds off-site and part removal of existing hardstanding.
  • Formation of a new entrance and works to an existing carriageway, including general road construction, road crossings, kerbs and surfacing.
  • Various types of foundations
  • Foundations for the installation of the pedestrian rail crossing bridge.
  • New drainage and existing drainage alterations, including installation of surface water linear drainage channels.
  • Installation of a duct network and service chambers for data, power, IT equipment, CCTV, signage and street lighting.
  • Kerbs, including HGV kerbs, to all building traffic islands.
  • Working alongside a specialist rail contractor for civil works to a rail crossing.
  • Excavations and civil works for water and electric service diversions.
  • Various visible concreting works included trafficked concrete paving areas and a rail crossing.
  • All paving works.
  • Installation of various bollards and signage

Challenges

The main challenge of the project was keeping the day-to-day port activities and operations running, especially coordinating the movement of container wagons. Our work was done on existing carriageways that they constantly used. Careful planning, coordination, and flexibility in working hours ensured the work was undertaken without causing delays or disruptions that could lead to financial implications.

Another challenge was installing a new concrete rail crossing on a live rail line. We successfully completed the task within the 72-hour timeframe without impacting port operations. A detailed hour-by-hour schedule was meticulously planned and closely monitored. Upgraded concrete with quick setting time was used, and a just-in-time delivery strategy, supported by strong supplier relationships, ensured smooth execution.

With two dedicated teams working in sync, the project was finished on schedule without delays or disruptions.

Summary

The creation of the automated gate expanded container operations and increased efficiency. Works were completed successfully, on time and within budget, to the satisfaction of the client.
