Tyne Dock Basin Infill and Bund Wall Works
Project Overview
Operating within a live port environment in South Shields, we successfully completed a range of large-scale enabling works to facilitate the construction of a new biomass facility at the Port of Tyne.
This complex civil and marine engineering project included removing a timber jetty and dock gates, bulk earthworks, including the mass importation of granular fill materials, and the creation of a bund wall and rock armour protection.
Surfacing was undertaken by our in-house team, and the material was provided by Tynedale Roadstone.
Scope of Works
Our scope of works included the following:
- Removal of a 100+-year-old timber jetty requiring highly experienced and qualified divers to cut out the existing quay.
- Removal of 10m x 6m dock gates.
- Import 74,500 tonnes of fill material to infill dock structure for future use.
- Import of 15,000 tonnes of primary and secondary rock armour to stabilise areas of erosion.
- Drainage diversions and installations, including over 200m of 1800mm diameter pipe work.
- Installation of port headwall into River Tyne.
- Full-depth construction of new access road, car park, engineering yard, haul road, and vehicle wash area.
- Street lighting installation.
- CCTV ducting, including draw pit installation.
- Vehicle Restraint System (VRS) and mooring bollard installation.
Sustainability
Early Contractor Involvement eliminated 4,500 wagon movements and 270,000 miles of travel, reducing our carbon emissions. We used a conveyor belt system on supply boats to ship materials directly to their desired location.
Summary
A 3-week programme saving was delivered through the direct import and fill from a stone company in the Netherlands. The works were completed successfully and within budget, to the client’s satisfaction.
