Framwellgate Moor Firestation Memorabilia goes home

Friday, July 20 2018

Retired County Durham Firefighter Robert Lynn watched as his former station in Framwellgate Moor, near Durham was demolished by MGL Demolition in 2016.

Mr Lynn followed his father Ernie into the fireservice - Ernie served at the same station from when the station opened in 1958 until 1981, when he retired.

Robert lives close to the now demolished firestation and wanted a small token of memorabilia from his former place of work.

Two stone name plaques from the front of the building were carefully removed as the demolition was carried out, and, until today have been stored at MGL Group head office in Durham.

Robert has made a donation to the Firefighters Charity in lieu of payment for the plaques, that has been matched by MGL Demolition, so, the plaques have gone to an appropriate home, and the Firefighters Charity have benefited financially.

Mr Lynn said 'My father would have been delighted about the purchase and subsequent donation as he served from the station opening in 1958 until 1981'

MGL Demolition Managing Director Mark Davison said 'Demolishing old and unused buildings to make way for new developments is progress, there are new homes where the old firestation was, and the Firefighters now have a new Firestation three miles away. The careful removal and storage of these stone plaques by our skilled demolition operatives, enables Mr Lynn to have the pleasure of retaining a little piece of Framwellgate Moor Firestation history, and this wonderful charity, that has supported injured and former firefighters and their families for over 75 years, has received a substantial donation towards the great work and support that they provide'.

MGL Group Director Gillian Reader is pictured with Mr Lynn as he collected one of the stone plaques.
