Work Experience at Tynedale Roadstone's Barton Plant

Friday, July 6 2018

As the school year comes to a close, students look for meaningful engagement with industry, in the form of work experience in order to try and plan for their future career or training.

Good quality work experience is hard to find, sometimes health and safety legislation prevents companies from permitting young people to be in their working environment, often companies don't have the time or resource to adequately accommodate them. Tynedale Roadstone, part of MGL Group, based at Barton Quarry, near Scotch Corner, have this week given work experience placements to two students from Richmond School.

Tynedale Roadstone's Dave Whitehouse said 'This is the second year we have welcomed students from Richmond School to our Barton plant and they have been a pleasure to work with. They have been interested in every step of the production process. It is so important for young people to gain an insight into all aspects of the construction industry, so thay can make informed choices regarding their future careers'.

The students Ben and Nathan, began their week with a Health & Safety induction, and then followed a structured programme of events throughout the week that enabled them to follow the sampling process, production and transport elements of the business.

'I have had a brilliant time being introduced into the industry.' said Nathan O'Connor, 'I was pleased to be included in aspects of logistical work and also physical samples, showing different sides of the engineering industry'

Ben Metcalfe also commented 'I have really enjoyed my week at Tynedale Roadstone. It has given me a good insight into future career opportunities that I may have. I found that I enjoy the "hands on" work that I have been doing throughout the week and hope it will help me in my future career'

Richmond School & Sixth Form College work very hard to engage with local businesses and industry, to try and access meaningful work experience for their students. Kevin Sandell, a teacher at Richmond School said 'Nathan and Ben have had a fantastic time; the photos really show how involved they've been throughout the week and how varied their experience has been. Thank you very much to the whole team for the opportunities they've been given.'

Ben and Nathan are pictured below along with Will Slack, who we congratulate as he has just completed his Foundation Degree in Mineral Extractives / Asphalt & Pavement / Clay / Concrete Technology from The University of Derby.

Everyone at MGL Group wishes Ben and Nathan the best of luck as they finish their education and then progress into the world of work.
