Enabling Construction & Regeneration Across the Region

Friday, May 24 2019

MGL Group continues to support the regeneration of the region by helping to unlock the potential of land that may otherwise have been abandoned.

Working on contaminated and Brownfield sites, MGL Group in partnership with its clients is preparing land for a number of high profile and significant construction projects which are changing the face of the region.

We provide turnkey services in construction and regeneration, including licenced asbestos removal, bulk earthworks, demolition, land remediation, groundworks, civil engineering, construction, surfacing and commercial property development.

Whether the site is to be used for housing, commercial warehousing or a large-scale operation, we are able to facilitate construction and regeneration projects, with a particular focus on so-called ‘blighted sites’ across the North East and wider UK.

We have been working with STRABAG UK and Sirius Minerals on the high-profile construction project at their Wilton-based Materials Handling Facility. The complex project involves bulk earthworks, heavy civil engineering and demolition, in order to provide a world-class facility.

The polyhalite will be mined at Woodsmith and then transported via a 37km long tunnel to the Wilton International facility in Redcar, to be granulated and prepared for export.

In order to complete the Materials Handling Facility requirements, MGL Group brought together our MGL Earthworks, MGL Demolition and Rainton Construction arms to seamlessly complete the project.

Utilising in-house capabilities and working with trusted supply chain partners, we take a holistic approach to projects, delivering added value solutions and value engineering. We also advocates Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) and a partnership approach to the work they undertake.

This combined approach has paid dividends over the 47 years we have been in operation, with clients including BAE Systems, Homes England, and Advance Northumberland trusting the business to develop sites back to a functional state.

Speaking about the redevelopment of Brownfield and contaminated sites, MGL Group Chief Executive, Gary Smith, said: “The sustainable benefits of being able to redevelop a blighted site are significant.

“The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) recently identified over 2,600 potential Brownfield sites which could be brought back into use across the UK, over two-thirds of which could be made available in the next five years.

“Having the expertise to redevelop these sites can have a huge impact on British businesses and the squeezed UK housing market. Unlocking the sites can provide great opportunities for future generations to live and work in areas that would otherwise remain an eyesore on the community, with the added bonus of not having to impact on existing identified Greenbelt areas.

“Such jobs often involve working with dangerous substances, such as asbestos, and safety is a fundamental matter. MGL Group uses BRE SmartWaste as an integral part of our operating procedures, ensuring our teams can work safely and smartly to give sites a new lease of life.”

MGL Group operates to the highest standards of Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) matters. The business is also proud to be a member of FORS – The Fleet Operator Recognition scheme which aims to raise the level of quality within fleet operations, and demonstrates which operators are achieving exemplary levels of best practice in safety, efficiency, and environmental protection.

As well as adhering to the highest levels of safety, we are committed to ensuring that all team members receive the highest levels of training. Available via our dedicated training arm, MGL Training Services, we deliver construction and demolition training and certified short courses.

The courses available via MGL Training Services, include Lift Operations and Plant Driving, Asbestos Awareness and Level 1 CCDO Operative, are industry-recognised, including UKATA, CPCS, NDTG and NPORS. All are available to both our own workforce and external companies, via conveniently located training centres in Durham and Newburn, Newcastle.

Expanding the team and retaining our skilled workforce, requires constant investment in staff wellbeing and opportunities for growth. This includes a structured Apprenticeship and training programme to allow our workforce every opportunity to progress.

MGL Group has been further strengthened recently to assist with continued growth, with strategic appointments made in senior positions within our Commercial, Health and Safety and Estimating teams.

In January, MGL Group was extremely proud to become a signatory on the Armed Forces Covenant, aimed at supporting service leavers in the often tough transition to civilian working life.

In order to ensure we are well equipped to handle increasingly complex regeneration projects, MGL Group consistently invests in new plant and equipment, laying our own groundwork for strong and sustained growth throughout the company.
