Demolition of 1970's Tower Block, Hebburn

Monday, January 22 2018

The Demolition of a 1970's tower block in  Hebburn, South Tyneside is part of an ambitious redevelopment and regeneration project by South Tyneside Council.

The high rise block at Westmorland Court, consisting of 133 flats, is being demolished bt MGL Demolition ahead of the regeneration of the site, and construction of good quality housing for local residents.

Councillor Alan West, lead member for housing at Souh Tyneside Council said: 'Demolition starting marks a major milestone in the regeneration of Hebburn Town Centre. The block was built in the '70s and the design and structure was very outdated. Bringing it up to standard would have run into millions of pounds. Providing modern, good quality housing for our residents is one of our priorities and these properties no longer made the grade.'

Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service were granted access to the recently empited building in the summer of 2017, for 2 weeks, to test cutting edge technology in a live training excercise.

The asbestos removal, soft strip and demolition works will be carried out by MGL Demolition and are expected to take 8 months.
